DC fiat to destroy anti-venom serum exposed to extreme heat

Friday, 05 July 2024 | PNS | DALTONGANJ

A total of 180 vials of the anti venom serum kept right on the top of the almirah for months together having extreme heat condition  at the community health center of Harihurganj must be ' destroyed'.

DC Palamu Shashi Ranjan said, "These anti venom serum vials so kept on the top of the almirah must be destroyed without fail."

He said with great amount of pain that "Even common sense is not common with the officials like in this case where they failed to do the right thing for these highly life saving vials."

Shashi Ranjan said if Harihurganj CHC has no fridge even then these vials could have been kept in ice pack available there for the routine immunisation.

DC reiterated common sense is getting very uncommon here with the officials.

Civil surgeon Palamu Dr Anil Kumar informed that the then medical officer in charge Rajesh Kushwaha would be show caused to explain this gross negligence and apathy towards the proper and adequate maintenance of the anti venom serum vials.

Civil surgeon said we have replaced Dr Kushwaha. The new medical officer in charge of the Harihurganj CHC is Dr Gopal Prasad.

On being asked if replacement is any enough for such an inhuman act of knowingly allowing life saving vials to go inefficacious by exposing it to extreme heat to which Dr Anil Kumar said "Certainly not. Persons like the then medical officer in charge, store keeper, block programme manager and anyone more will have to face music for the loss of these anti venom serum vials in times like this when snake bite cases will be around this CHC territory."

No snake bite victim can be left to any illusion of false sense of safety with this over exposed anti venom serum vials to extreme heat in the past months reminded the civil surgeon.

There will be collective punitive action wherein the cost of the 180 vials so got lost, will be recovered or realised from all the three reiterated civil surgeon.

Again asked if this sad episode would be hushed up under any kind of  pressure to which Dr Anil Kumar said "There is no question about it. It won't be hushed up. The erring medical officer in charge and others can't get away. They are to pay for their extremely unprofessional and unmedical handling of the anti venom serum vials."
