Country’s first historical Saragarhi Museum inaugurated in Ferozepur

Saturday, 16 March 2024 | PNS | Chandigarh/Ferozepur

India’s first Saragarhi Museum, commemorating the valiant sacrifice and bravery of 21 Sikh soldiers who laid down their lives in the historic battle of Saragarhi, was unveiled to the public on Friday. With an investment of Rs two crore, the Museum was inaugurated by Ferozepur (Urban) MLA Ranbir Singh Bhullar and Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Dhiman.

The state government orchestrated a ceremony to honour national heroes, raise awareness about Punjab's illustrious history, boost tourism, and foster the development of significant sites.

The Museum showcases artifacts, equipment, and the signaling technology utilized during the Saragarhi War, providing visitors, especially students, with historical and technical insights.

Comprising seven galleries, the Museum delves into various facets of the Saragarhi Post and the battle. The first gallery recounts the history of Saragarhi, featuring a model of the post and details about the martyrs. Gallery-2 hosts a 3D theater screening a film depicting the battle, while Gallery-3 showcases heliography techniques used for signaling during that era.

Gallery-4 provides a comprehensive overview of the battle's events and aftermath, followed by Gallery-5, which exhibits replicas of weapons used by Sikh soldiers and Afghans. Gallery-6, known as the Last Man Gallery, pays homage to the last martyr, Gurmukh Singh, while Gallery-7 serves as a tribute and selfie gallery, featuring interactive displays and newspaper clippings.

Constructed to honour the 21 soldiers who valiantly defended the Saragarhi post against 10,000 Afghans on September 12, 1897, the Museum stands as a testament to their courage and sacrifice. Additionally, the ongoing development of the Saragarhi Memorial, initiated by the Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is expected to further enhance tourism in Ferozepur and educate visitors about Punjabi valour.

DC Rajesh Dhiman highlighted the Government's efforts to promote tourism and upgrade historical sites in Ferozepur, including the renovation of the Hussainiwala Martyrdom Memorial. With a focus on enhancing facilities and amenities for tourists, a substantial investment of Rs 25 crore has been allocated for the beautification of monuments, parks, and infrastructure.

The unveiling of the Saragarhi Museum not only pays homage to the heroic soldiers but also signifies Punjab's rich heritage and the government's commitment to preserving it for future generations.
