The community health center of Harihurganj is in the news for extreme wrong reasons.

 Here on Saturday civil surgeon Dr Anil Kumar made a surprise inspection. 

What he saw there baffled him most making him wonder if a doctor or for that matter any paramedic may be so ignorant so as not to keep anti venom serum vials in proper way and manner. 

Dr Anil Kumar told this correspondent that "I saw scores of the anti venom serum vials kept on the top of the steel almirah. It's never a place to keep any injectible or tablets even what to talk about antidote to snake bites."

These vials were there on the top of the almirah for weeks and months added Dr Anil Kumar. 

These vials were exposed to high temperatures that Palamu underwent in April, May and 25 or 26 days in June too. 

The civil surgeon said the common knowledge and sense is to have anti venom serum vials be kept away from exposure to excessive heat. It should be in lesser cool area within the fridge. 

Again it is not to freeze. Here at the CHC Harihurganj these vials were made exposed to higher temperatures. 

On being asked if the lot of 186 vials so exposed to excessive heat would be discarded civil surgeon said "We would inform the senior health officials in Ranchi. We will wait for the directives in this regard."

However he said as of now we would rush in 30 vials of the anti venom serum here at the CHC Harihurganj. 

Each vial is worth more than 600 rupees. Again it's minimum 10 vials for 1 snake bite victim. 

Dr Anil Kumar said we have seen cases where 50 vials of anti venom serum have been used with severe or critical snake bite victims. 

The vials at the CHC Harihurganj that were found to be exposed to the excessive heat was a combo pack which means one vial was common for bite by either cobra, common karait, russell viper or saw scaled viper. 

Those responsible for mismanagement to the upkeep of the anti venom serum vials will have to explain their conduct asserted the civil surgeon.
