Former Chief Minister and Congress MP from Jalandhar Charanjit Singh Channi on Tuesday apologized for derogatory comments he made about women and two communities during a campaign for party candidate Amrita Warring in Gidderbaha. The apology came after the Punjab State Women’s Commission issued a show-cause notice, citing the remarks in a video circulating online.
Channi expressed regret, stating he never intended to offend anyone. “If anyone’s sentiments have been hurt, I apologise with folded hands,” he said, adding that he could never think of saying anything against women. “I am not against anyone. Whosoever is hurt, I apologise,” he added.
The Commission had demanded a response within a day and warned of an FIR if Channi failed to comply. The AAP and BJP condemned his comments, with BJP Mahila Morcha president Jai Inder Kaur criticizing his “low mentality” and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora denouncing the use of “vulgar language” by a former CM.
