Cases of heat stroke surge as temperatures soar

Friday, 31 May 2024 | PNS | Jamshedpur

With the city experiencing maximum temperatures exceeding 44 degrees Celsius, cases of heat stroke have surged, prompting concerns among residents and healthcare professionals alike. The scorching heat, with the maximum temperature recorded at 44.2 degrees Celsius on Thursday, surpasses the normal temperature by five degrees.

Reports indicate a significant rise in cases of heat stroke, leading to hospitalizations as heatwave conditions grip the region. Nursing homes and private hospitals have witnessed a surge in admissions, with patients suffering from dehydration, cough-cold, seasonal flu, gastroenteritis, and jaundice.

An official at M G M Medical College and Hospital, stated that the Steel City has been witnessing an average of two to three hospitalizations due to heat stroke daily. Patients present symptoms of dehydration, mild fever, and cough.

In light of the escalating temperatures, he advised residents to avoid direct exposure to sunlight and ensure adequate intake of fluids, along with maintaining a healthy diet.

The Sonari meteorological office has predicted a continued rise in maximum temperatures due to prevailing westerly winds across the state. However, there are no indications of rain in the near forecast, leaving residents eagerly awaiting relief from the scorching heat.

Furthermore, the meteorological office has extended its heatwave warning for an additional two days, as severe heatwave conditions persist over the Chottanagpur plateau region. The warning underscores the severity of the heatwave, particularly over parts of Kolhan, urging residents to take necessary precautions to mitigate its effects.

As the city grapples with the relentless heatwave, residents are advised to stay indoors during peak sunlight hours, stay hydrated, and seek medical attention in case of heat-related illnesses. With the heatwave showing no signs of relenting, the city braces itself for continued challenges posed by the soaring temperatures.
