Sikh girl not allowed to wear kirpan in exam centre: Sukhbir expresses shocking

Chandigarh:  SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Sunday strongly condemned the “shocking” incident in which Armanjot Kaur, an advocate and Amrithdari Sikh from Jalandhar, was barred from taking her judicial services exam for not parting with her sacred kirpan. Wearing kirpan is one of the five kakars and is a part of the Sikh rehat maryada (code of conduct). He strongly urged Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma to arrange a special chance to enable Armanjot to appear in a special exam as she missed it for no fault of hers. “I also urge Rajasthan CM to ensure that guilty members of concerned exam staff are given an exemplary punishment to ensure that such incidents don’t happen again,” he said.

 

Punjab Speaker felicitates hockey players with cash prizes

Chandigarh: Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Sunday honoured Chandigarh hockey players with cash prizes during the Olympic Day and felicitation ceremony. These players had represented Indian hockey teams in international tournaments and brought laurels to the city and Hockey Chandigarh. Sandhwan announced a grant of Rs five lakh to Hockey Chandigarh — an affiliated unit of Hockey India, acknowledging the players’ outstanding performance that illuminated the city's name on various international platforms.

 

2271 appeared for LLB entrance test at PU

Chandigarh: Panjab University, Chandigarh, on Sunday conducted the entrance test for admission to LLB - three years course from 10 am to 11.30 am. Total seven centers were created — two at Panjab University Campus, two at Dev Samaj College, Sector 45-B, and three at DAV College Sector 10, Chandigarh. Total 87.96 percent — 2,271 out of 2,582 — candidates appeared in the entrance test.  Observers were sent to the centers for routine checking and smooth conduct of the test.  The test was conducted satisfactorily and no untoward incident was reported.

 

BJP leaders paid tributes to Dr Mukherji on his martyrdom day

Jalandhar: Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar, former Jalandhar MP Sushil Kumar Rinku, former Jalandhar West MLA Sheetal Angural, state general secretary Rakesh Rathore, and state vice president KD Bhandari on Sunday paid tribute to the founder of Bharatiya Jana Sangh, Dr Syama Prasad Mukherji, on his martyrdom day. BJP national executive member and former minister Manoranjan Kalia also paid floral tributes to Dr Mukherji at Ekta Sathal Madhopur, saying that he sacrificed his life for the unity and integrity of India.

 

‘Enhanced accountability in Haryana police through new assessment initiative’

Chandigarh: In a significant development, Haryana Police on Sunday claimed to have enhanced the quality of policing and functioning of cops by introduction of assessment proforma. These proforma set benchmarks and enhance efficiency for every officer and employee. Under the leadership of state DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor, comprehensive performance reports have been created for all personnel, fostering a sense of accountability and motivation among officers, said the official spokesperson.

 

Update Aadhaar card for free until Sept 14

Chandigarh: UIDAI has extended the free Aadhaar card update deadline to September 14, 2024, for the convenience of the public. An official spokesperson stated that the aadhaar card is the most important document for availing government schemes and updating Aadhaar cards that are 10 years old is necessary. Initially, the free update was available until June 14, which has been extended by three months i.e. September 14, 2024. Citizens can also update their Aadhaar cards themselves by visiting the website uidai.gov.in.  Apart from this, they can also visit any CSC or Aadhaar center to get it done.

 

Nominations for Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar can be submitted by July 31

Chandigarh: The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development has invited nominations for the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar (PMRBP) by July 31, 2024. Under the PMRBP, children aged between five and 18 years as of July 31, who have achieved exceptional accomplishments in bravery, sports, social science, science and technology, environment, and arts and culture will be awarded by the President at a ceremony to be held in January 2025. The awards will be announced on December 26, 2024, on the occasion of National Veer Bal Diwas.

 

Musical tribute paid to legendary poet Patar

Chandigarh: Dr Vikramjit Singh Sahney paid a heartfelt homage to the enduring legacy of Padma Shri Surjit Patar ji, who passed away on May 11, 2024, through a global premiere of musical rendition of his poetry ‘Kujh Keha Tan’. Dr Sahney, Rajya Sabha MP, Sun Foundation chairman and World Punjabi Organization’s international president, is also a passionate Sufi singer and has beautifully encapsulated the essence of Dr Patar’s poetry through this musical tribute.

 

Punjab IPRM condoles demise of a father of Hindi daily’s RE

Chandigarh: Punjab Information and Public Relations Minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra on Sunday expressed profound grief over the passing of Khem Raj Chaudhary, father of Darpan Chaudhary, the resident editor of a Hindi daily newspaper. Khem Raj Chaudhary (81) passed away due to a heart attack while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mohali on Saturday. The retired Air Force officer had participated in the wars against Pakistan in 1965 and 1971. Jouramajra, in his condolence message, shared his heartfelt sympathies with the bereaved family; and prayed to the Almighty to grant eternal peace to the departed soul and give strength to the family to bear this irreparable loss.
