Awareness chariot rolls out to educate on dangers of drug abuse

Friday, 21 June 2024 | PNS | Jamshedpur

In a decisive move to combat the escalating issue of drug abuse, the District Public Relations Office of East Singhbhum has launched an extensive drug de-addiction awareness campaign. This initiative, which is directed by District Magistrate cum Deputy Commissioner Ananya Mittal, is set to run from June 19 to June 26. The campaign marks a significant effort by the district authorities to raise awareness and edu

cate the public on the severe consequences of drug addiction.

The inauguration ceremony was held at the Collectorate, where Deputy Development Commissioner Manish Kumar officially flagged off the awareness chariot, symbolizing the start of the week-long campaign. In his opening remarks, Kumar underscored the importance of public education on the dangers of addiction. He elaborated on the campaign’s strategy, noting that the awareness chariot will traverse various rural and urban areas, imparting critical information on the detrimental effects of drug abuse on health, family dynamics, and societal well-being.

The primary objective of this campaign is multifaceted: to inform the public about the dangers of drug and alcohol addiction, to motivate individuals to renounce these substances, and to foster a community-wide commitment to a drug-free lifestyle. Kumar emphasized, "The goal of this initiative is not only to inform but also to inspire individuals to abandon alcohol and other addictive substances." This mission was reinforced by a pledge taken by attendees at the event to abstain from intoxicants, reflecting the community’s dedication to this cause.

The centerpiece of the campaign is the awareness chariot, which is designed to travel across various locales, including remote rural areas and densely populated urban centers. This mobile unit is equipped with informative materials and audio-visual aids to effectively communicate the harmful effects of drug consumption.

At each stop, the chariot will host interactive sessions aimed at engaging the local population. These sessions will feature experts in addiction medicine, social workers, and recovered addicts who will share their experiences and provide practical advice on avoiding and overcoming addiction.

The campaign will distribute brochures, pamphlets, and posters that detail the risks associated with drug use and provide information on where to seek help. These materials will be made available in multiple languages to cater to the diverse population of East Singhbhum.

Recognizing that teenagers and young adults are particularly vulnerable to addiction, the campaign includes targeted programs in schools and colleges. These programs will focus on preventive education, aiming to equip young people with the knowledge and skills to resist peer pressure and make healthy choices.

This campaign is a critical component of a broader state-wide effort to curb drug abuse. It includes stringent measures against drug traffickers and users, coupled with a strong emphasis on preventive education. The comprehensive strategy aims to address the root causes of addiction and provide support to those affected.
