Authorities mobilise to tackle potential flood threats, vigil on rising water level

In light of potential flooding dangers in areas prone to waterlogging from the Swarnarekha and Kharkai rivers, a crucial meeting was convened under the chairmanship of District Magistrate cum Deputy Commissioner  Ananya Mittal. The meeting focused on disaster preparedness and coordinated response strategies to mitigate flood risks.

During the review,  Mittal directed officials to establish Incident Command Centers in identified Panchayat and Municipal Council areas. He emphasized making helpline numbers public, ensuring regular cleanliness, distributing essential medicines and rations, providing tankers for drinking water, and setting up alternative arrangements for electricity. Emergency service departments were instructed to deploy personnel in alert mode 24x7 and equip them with essential life-saving medicines and facilities.

 Mittal also stressed the importance of better coordination between civil society, local public representatives, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the police-administrative team. To prevent the spread of infectious diseases, he directed regular cleaning, bleaching, and spraying of DDT powder in flood-affected areas. In case of a disaster, departments were instructed to use social media and traditional mike announcements to quickly disseminate information and alerts to the public.

Mechanical departments were tasked with regularly updating the water levels of the Swarnarekha and Kharkai rivers. Coordination with engineers from Chandil Dam in Saraikela Kharsawan and the dam in Mayurbhanj, Odisha, regarding water release was also emphasized. Additionally, steps were mandated for cleaning the garbage at Swarnarekha Barrage. Mechanical departments were instructed to regularly update the water level of Swarnarekha and Kharkai rivers, and to coordinate with the engineers of Chandil Dam located in Saraikela Kharsawan and the dam located in Mayurbhanj of neighboring state Odisha regarding the release of water from the dams. Also, instructions were given to take appropriate steps for cleaning the garbage of Subarnarekha Barrage.

The meeting saw the participation of Deputy Development Commissioner  Manish Kumar, ADM (SOR)  Mahendra Kumar, District Supply Officer  Salman Zafar Khijri, representatives of the NDRF, municipal officials, SDM Dhalbhum, BDO, CO Jamshedpur Sadar, engineers from the Subarnarekha multipurpose project, and representatives from Civil Defence.

The District Magistrate's comprehensive directives aim to bolster Jamshedpur's readiness to tackle potential flood disasters, ensuring the safety and well-being of its residents.
