Atishi Cabinet: Five ministers take oath as city gets new CM

Five ministers took oath along with Atishi on Saturday.  Except one new face, all the other four were allocated the same portfolios they were holding in the Arvind Kejriwal government.  Mukesh Ahlawat is the only new face in the cabinet. The ministers in the AAP government led by Chief Minister Atishi, after being sworn-in on Saturday, asserted that the mission before them was to ensure that Arvind Kejriwal was brought back to the top post after the assembly polls early next year.

 

Gopal Rai:

Gopal Rai was the Minister for Environment, Forest & Wildlife, Development and General Administration in Government of Delhi in the previous government. He is also a member of the Political Affairs Committee of the Aam Aadmi Party. Rai is a Post-graduate in Sociology and began his career with the All India Students Association in Lucknow University in 1992. He is a member of the National Executive of the AAP. Currently he is MLA from Babarpur assembly constituency. Environment Minister Rai said the "mission" now was to bring back Kejriwal as the chief minister with the support of the people of Delhi. “The objective in front of all of us now is to take forward the work that was started in Delhi under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal to new heights by the time of next elections. Along with this, we will work as a team to control pollution that increases during the winters. We will also work on other pending work,” he added.

 

Saurabh Bharadwaj:

Bharadwaj is representing Greater Kailash constituency in the Delhi Legislative Assembly. In the past, he was the Chairman of the Delhi Jal Board and Minister of Health, Urban development and water from 9 March 2023. He is also the National Chief Spokesperson of the AAP. He completed his early schooling from the city. He graduated as a Computer Science Engineer and also completed a bachelor's degree in law. Before entering politics, Bhardwaj worked with Johnson Controls India, and his expertise was in microchips and coding.

 

3. Kailash Gehlot:

Kailash Gahlot is an AAP MLA who was Transport Minister in the Arvind Kejriwal-led government. He represents the Najafgarh constituency and is a member of the Aam Aadmi Party political party and is a cabinet minister of the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government. He enjoys close relationship with the AAP National Convener Arvind Kejriwal and is also a non controversial face. He has a good reputation among the party leaders. His announcement will also help AAP in Haryana assembly elections. Gahlot was born in a Jat family of Gehlot gotra. He attended the University of Delhi and attained Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Laws, Master of Laws degrees. He was a cabinet minister in the Kejriwal ministry and holds the charge of Transpor, Revenue, law & Justice, legislative Affairs Information & Technology, Administrative Reforms, etc.

 “We have only one ‘sankalp' (resolution) which is bringing back Arvind Kejriwal through the upcoming Assembly elections in Delhi. Arvind Kejriwal says that we need to serve the people of Delhi as their brother and son. We need to go amongst people and take our (development) work from door-to-door,” Gahlot said after taking oath.

 

4. Imran Hussain:

Hussain represents the Ballimaran constituency of Delhi. He has been inducted in the Delhi Cabinet as a Minister of Food and Civil Supplies and Election. He comes from the walled city area of Delhi. He studied at Crescent School in Daryaganj and attended the Jamia Millia Islamia and attained Bachelor of Business Studies degree.  He was inducted into the Delhi Cabinet as a Minister of Food and Civil Supplies and Election on 18 October 2015. He was re-elected in the 2020 Delhi Legislative Assembly election and became an MLA in the Sixth Legislative Assembly of Delhi Hussain said that AAP leaders, workers and people of Delhi were "hurt" by Kejriwal's resignation. “He was framed on false charges and then he resigned himself. Delhi's public is unhappy about it. They have decided to re-elect Arvind Kejriwal as the CM after four months,” he added.

 

5. Mukesh Ahlawat:

Belongs from dalit community, is a first-time MLA has been inducted to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Social Welfare Minister Raaj Kumar Anand. Anand resigned from the Kejriwal government and the AAP in April, subsequently joining the BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Ahalawat is currently the co-incharge of the party's Rajasthan unit.By profession, Ahlawat identifies himself as a businessman. Born on November 9, 1975, Ahlawat completed his education up to class 12 from Ravindra Public School, CBSE, in 1994. Ahlawat said that he was "shocked" to get the call for being made a minister and added that he will try to properly discharge the responsibility entrusted to him.
