Akhilesh hoping for bigger role in national politics

Saturday, 08 June 2024 | PNS | Lucknow

Hoping for a big role for himself in national politics, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav is likely to resign from the membership of Uttar Pradesh assembly.

With his resignation, Akhilesh will also give up the post of leader of opposition in the Uttar Pradesh assembly. Akhilesh Yadav was elected to UP assembly from Karhal constituency in Manipuri district in the 2022 UP assembly polls.

A decision on who will replace Akhilesh Yadav as the leader of opposition in the UP assembly has not been taken yet. It is expected that Akhilesh may pick his uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav for the role of leader of opposition in the assembly as he is one of the senior leaders in the party.

Akhilesh reclaimed the Yadav family bastion of Kannauj by winning the Lok Sabha constituency by polling 6,42,292 votes, defeating sitting Bharatiya Janata Party MP Subrat Pathak by more than one lakh votes.

Samajwadi Party had earlier announced to field Tej Pratap Yadav, nephew of Akhilesh Yadav, from Kannauj Lok Sabha constituency. However, the decision was later changed due to dissatisfaction among the party workers who wanted Akhilesh Yadav to contest from the seat.

Akhilesh Yadav had made debut in politics in 2000 by contesting the by-election to Kannauj Lok Sabha seat.  He later contested from Kannauj in 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

In 2019, Akhilesh Yadav had contested the Lok Sabha election from Azamgarh Lok Sabha constituency. In 2022, he contested the UP assembly election from Karhal and resigned the Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat.

Meanwhile, Akhilesh Yadav was accorded a warm welcome in the state office of the party here on Friday on his arrival there after the party won 37 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.

Addressing the party cadre, the SP chief expressed his gratitude towards the electorate and the party cadre for the success of the party candidates in Lok Sabha elections.

He said the Lok Sabha elections results were as per the expectations of the people. He said many more candidates would have been elected but the district administration in several constituencies sabotaged their election prospects.

Akhilesh Yadav said the Lok Sabha election results were the victory of the ideology and the Constitution of India. He said the people had rejected the agenda of hate pursued by the Bharatiya Janata Party and had voted for inclusive and positive politics.
