In recognition of World Brain Tumor Day, AIIMS Bhopal highlights the critical importance of early detection and public awareness to combat the growing incidence of brain tumors. Professor (Dr) Ajai Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, emphasized that identifying brain tumors in their early stages significantly improves treatment outcomes and provides quicker relief for patients.

"By raising awareness and dispelling misconceptions, we can ensure that patients receive better support and integration into society," stated Dr. Singh. "Every year, approximately 28,000 people in India are diagnosed with brain tumors, and at AIIMS Bhopal, we perform brain tumor surgeries on about 400 patients annually."

Dr Sumit Raj, Additional Professor in the Department of Neuro Surgery at AIIMS Bhopal, explained the types of brain tumors: "Tumors can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Benign tumors consist of normal cells, while malignant tumors are composed of abnormal cells that grow uncontrollably. Brain tumors develop from abnormal cells forming in any part of the brain. While the exact cause remains unidentified, prolonged exposure to radiation is believed to be a significant risk factor. Brain cancer is the second most common cause of cancer in children."

Highlighting the theme for this year's World Brain Tumor Day, "Brain Health and Prevention," AIIMS Bhopal is dedicated to educating the public about the symptoms and early signs of brain tumors.

Singh remarked, "Our goal is to enable more people to recognize the early symptoms and seek timely treatment, which can be life-saving."

AIIMS Bhopal urges the community to take proactive steps towards brain health by being informed about the disease. Early symptoms can include persistent headaches, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, balance issues, and cognitive or personality changes. Awareness campaigns and educational programs will be held to disseminate this crucial information.
