The 76th ISSH Basic Course in Hand Surgery commenced today at AIIMS Bhopal, marking a significant milestone as the first workshop of its kind in Central India. This two-day event, organized by the Department of Orthopaedics at AIIMS Bhopal in collaboration with the Department of Burns & Plastic Surgery, AIIMS Bhopal, and the Bhopal Orthopaedic Surgeons' Society (BOSS), is held under the aegis of the Indian Society for Surgery of the Hand (ISSH).

The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. (Dr) Ajai Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, who emphasized the critical importance of hand surgery. "Hand surgery is vital. At the initial stage itself, we must strive to minimize further complications. Another crucial aspect is managing a crushed hand to ensure optimal functionality. All orthopedic surgeons must learn the basics of hand surgery, as it is a very important aspect of trauma care," said Prof. Singh.

Dr. John Santoshi welcomed the gathering, setting the tone for the workshop. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, President of the Bhopal Orthopaedic Surgeons' Society, highlighted the socio-economic aspect of hand injuries, noting, "In 90% of cases, hand injuries occur among poor or lower-middle-class individuals. It is imperative that we understand how we can better treat these injuries."

Prof. Dr. Bhaskaranand Kumar, Former Professor of Orthopaedics and Head of Hand & Microvascular Speciality at Kasturba Medical College & Hospital, Manipal, spoke on the workshop's purpose, emphasizing, "Our main aim is to ensure the safety and functionality of hands. Fast and accurate initial evaluation of hand injuries is crucial, allowing for timely medical treatment and reduced complications."

The workshop is attended by over 100 orthopedic and plastic surgeons from across the country, underscoring the widespread interest and importance of advancing skills in hand surgery.

The intricate design and anatomy of the hand make it a unique and vital part of the human body. Even minor injuries to the hand can result in significant impairment, necessitating thorough medical evaluation and care. This workshop aims to equip surgeons with the knowledge and skills to provide optimal care for hand injuries, thereby minimizing the risk of long-term disability. More than 1000 cases of hand injury are reported at AIIMS Bhopal annually.
