Agnipath, old pension issue among reasons for LS poll defeat, says UP BJP chief

Friday, 19 July 2024 | PNS | Lucknow

The 15-page report by BJP UP president Bhupendra Chaudhary has identified anger towards the ‘Agnipath’ scheme, paper leaks, old pension issue, dissatisfaction of party workers towards the government and the displeasure of the Rajput community among the 10 reasons for the disastrous performance of the party in 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh.

The report submitted to the party’s central leadership, also noted that the opposition’s allegation that reservation would be abolished gained momentum due to the state government giving priority to people of the general category in the recruitment of contract workers for government jobs.

The report also cited the statements given by party leaders on changing the Constitution, and worker’ reduced enthusiasm till the sixth and seventh phases of voting due to early ticket distribution.

The report also noted that the names of BJP’s core voters were removed from the electoral rolls by election officials at the lower level. In almost all seats, 30,000-40,000 names of the party’s core voters were removed, the report said.

The state BJP drafted the 15-page report on the basis of feedback from 40,000 party workers across the 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh. The BJP state president had met the top leaders in Delhi on Wednesday and discussed the report.

The BJP won just 33 of UP’s 80 Lok Sabha seats in 2024 polls, a significant decline from its 2019 and 2014 numbers. Collectively, the opposition INDIA bloc won 43 seats.

Chaudhary also held a long meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president JP Nadda over the report.

The report said that the BJP’s vote share decreased by at least 8 per cent in all six regions of the state - Western UP, Braj, Kanpur-Bundelkhand, Awadh, Gorakhpur and Kashi.

The party’s worst performance came in the West and Kashi regions, where it got only eight out of 28 seats.

In Braj, it got eight out of 13 seats. In Gorakhpur, the party got only six out of 13 seats, while in Awadh, it got only seven out of 16 seats.

In Kanpur-Bundelkhand, the BJP failed to regain its existing seats, winning only four out of 10 seats.

The internal report also flagged that the percentage of votes received by the BJP from non-Yadav OBCs (Kurmi, Kori, Maurya, Shakya and Lodh castes) had decreased.

The report also noted that a decrease in the Dalit vote share of Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was behind the Congress’s improved performance. The report stated a 10 per cent decrease in the core vote share of the BSP.

It further said the party got only one-third of the Dalit votes as compared to 2019.
