AAP marks consecration with religious events

Tuesday, 23 January 2024 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, considered one of the Modi government’s strong critics, has stayed away from the consecration ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. However, that has not stopped the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo and his party members from celebrating the event. Kejriwal, Cabinet ministers and AAP MLAs took part in various events across the national capital as part of the party's plan to mark the consecration ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya. The Aam Aadmi Party organised various events in the city, including Sundarkand recitation, ‘Bhandaras' (feasts), ‘Shobha Yatras’ (processions), and Aarti (prayer) across Delhi's 70 assembly constituencies to mark the consecration ceremony.

Kejriwal, participated in several programs in his Assembly constituency offering prayers for the well-being, peace, prosperity, and development of the Delhiites. During this time, Kejriwal also enshrined Ram Lalla's idol at Albert Square on RK Ashram Marg. Along with the Cabinet ministers of the Kejriwal government, MLAs, and councillors also participated in various programs.

In a post in Hindi on X, Kejriwal said he participated in bhandaras organised in different areas of Delhi. "Hearty congratulations and best wishes to all of you on this sacred occasion of the installation of Maryada Purushottam Lord Shri Ram in the grand temple. Hail Siya Ram," he said in another post.

Kejriwal first arrived at the Udayan Marg where he participated in the ongoing program of ‘Ramayana’ recitation and kirtan. Afterwards, he took Prasad from the ‘Bhandara’ and reached Panchkuian Road near the RK Ashram Marg Metro Station. Here, Kejriwal joined the Sundarkand recitation program organized by the ‘Pracheen Sannyas Ashram Shiv Hanuman Mandir Trust’ and accepted Prasad after listening to the Sundarkand recitation. Around noon, the CM arrived at Block C on Ashram Marg, where he inaugurated the installation of the idol of Ram Lalla and accepted the prasad from the Bhandara.

The new Ram Lalla idol was consecrated at the Ayodhya temple on Monday, an event led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and watched by lakhs of people on television at their homes and in temples across the country.

"Our Ram has come," Modi said in his address that followed the consecration, which also marked the temple's inauguration.  In Delhi, Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj participated in a 'Sundar Kand' recital at Sheikh Sarai.

"On the auspicious occasion of the 'Pran Prathistha' at the Ram temple, I had the privilege of attending the 'Sundar Kand' recital organised at Sheikh Sarai 2. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has organised shobha yatras and 'Sundar Kand' recitals in every ward of Delhi. Jai Siya Ram," he said in a post in Hindi on X. His Cabinet colleague Atishi participated in a puja and havan on the occasion.

In a post in Hindi on X, she said, "On the auspicious occasion of the 'Pran Pratishtha', I performed a puja and havan of Lord Shri Ram. Shri Ram is present in every particle of this world and in the mind of every human being. If we adopt the ideals of Maryada Purushottam (Lord Ram) in our personality, then life will be blessed. Jai Shri Ram."

Other party leaders will also hold events during the day. The Delhi government's three-day Ramlila at ITO's Pearey Lal Bhawan will culminate in the evening. The Delhi government wanted to stage events at the Bharat Mandapam, but failed to get permission for the venue from the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) that manages the facility.

Experts say after failing to secure any parliamentary seats in 2014 and 2019, the AAP’s national convenor has peddled into religious politics and is following a similar path like the BJP. They say the party’s reference to Deshbhakti curriculum, a course taught at all Delhi government schools to inculcate a sense of patriotism among students, and the launch of Mukhyamantri Tirth Yatra Yojana shows its shift in politics.

In view of the events being organised by the AAP, the BJP has accused Kejriwal of misleading people for his political gains.  Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly Ramvir Singh Bidhuri said, “Kejriwal is part of an alliance that called Sanatan Dharma a disease and he could have easily severed his ties with him. He abused the people he is clicking pictures with. People are aware of his politics and will face repercussions also.”
