An 80-year-old bedridden woman tragically died of hunger and thirst after being locked in a room by her son, who then left the city with his family.
The incident occurred in the Nishatpura area of Bhopal and came to light on Sunday, according to the police.The deceased, Lalita Dubey, lived with her son, Arun, who left for Ujjain with his wife and son after locking her inside the house.
Arun later called his brother, Ajay, who resides in Indore, and informed him of his departure to Ujjain. Concerned about their mother, Ajay requested a friend in Bhopal to check on her. Unfortunately, upon reaching the house, Ajay's friend discovered Lalita Dubey had already passed away.
Bhopal Police, alerted to the situation, arrived at the scene and sent the body for postmortem. The autopsy revealed "severe hunger and water loss" as the cause of death, confirming the distressing circumstances of her demise.
Following a formal complaint lodged by Ajay, police registered a case against Arun under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for unintentional murder.
