The post poll violence continued in Bengal unabated leaving two BJP workers dead in the past 24 hours, sources said. Gaur Hari Maity of Arjun Nagar in Bhagwanpur village under Bhupatinagar Police Station was beaten to death by alleged TMC goons, his family members said.
"Local TMC men had come looking for Shashanka Maity the son of Gaur Hari but getting the wind of it he fled the home… when they could not find him they abducted his father Gaur Hari and took him to an unknown destination where he was beaten to death," locals said. The area falls under Kanthi Lok Sabha constituency from where BJP candidate Dibyendu Adhikari won in the recently concluded general elections.
"The deceased was taken to the hospital where he was declared 'brought dead'," a district level police officer said adding the "police have started investigation.
He said they will wait for the postmortem report to come to any conclusion … all the angles are being investigated."
Speaking to the media Bengal Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari said that post-poll violence had become a regular affair in the State. "This is not one off case … they killed another of our men at Cooch Behar … where the TMC goons attacked the house of one of our workers Sanjay Burman … who in a bid save himself by speeding off with his motorcycle … met with an accident and died … this was an accident induced by the TMC men and we will demand justice against it."
Early this month Hafizul Sheikh a BJP worker was allegedly murdered at Krishnagar in Nadia district. He had joined the BJP from CPI(M) and had worked for the saffron party. After the elections he was shot dead and beheaded. His assailants carried away his severed head as a trophy.
The Wednesday's incident came in the midst of a BJP fact finding team led by former Tripura Chief Minister visiting Bengal. Reacting to the post poll violence former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad who was also a part of the team said what was happening in the name of post poll violence should stop adding "the BJP workers are being raped, their houses looted and they are being murdered … Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who is a woman herself should feel ashamed of this."
Adhikari said the BJP would continue to fight against the BJP adding Governor CB Ananda Bose should visit the affected areas and take of the situation himself.
The incident comes a day after the Union Home Ministry informed the Calcutta High Court that it has no reservation if the deployment of central forces in Bengal was extended in the light of alleged post-poll violence. The Court on Tuesday directed the Centre to assess the situation and submit before it the facts on June 21 the next date of hearing. The BJP has been asking for extension of the deployment of central forces in Bengal.
In separate PILs filed by Adhikari and BJP advocate Priyanka Tibrewal before the Division Bench of Justice Harish Tandon it was alleged that the TMC goons were attacking the members of the opposition particularly the BJP in the continued post poll violence. They demanded the delaying the withdrawal of central forces from Bengal.
