Days after the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) suspended Delhi Zoo's membership for six months due to concerns about the mistreatment of Shankar, a 29-year-old African elephant, a ray of hope has emerged: Botswana has stepped forward with a promise to send a female elephant to accompany the lonely giant, a move aiming to ensure his well-being.
Though Zimbabwe too agreed but talks are being finalized with Botswana, said an official in the Delhi Zoo also known as National Zoological Park.
On Wednesday, Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh who also happens to be the Minister of External Affairs said that he had reached out to several countries, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Zambia, Tanzania, Namibia, Kenya, and Botswana, regarding a companion for Shankar.
“Positive responses were received from Botswana and Zimbabwe, who pledged to provide an elephant, with all formalities currently being completed,” he told the officials during his visit to the Delhi Zoo to assess Shankar's health and maintenance arrangements, as per a statement here.
He inspected Shankar's enclosure and engaged in detailed discussions with the mahouts and veterinarians, even feeding Shankar fruits. Experts from Vantara, Jamnagar, Gujarat, and elephant specialist Dr. Adrian from South Africa were also present, discussing measures to improve Shankar's health and developing an action plan.
During his visit, Minister Singh also gathered information about the facilities available for both tourists and animals.
