While the first two phases of elections remained by far peaceful, violence tended to creep in as electioneering entered parts of South Bengal with a Trinamool Congress worker getting killed in a factional fight in Baguati area of northern Kolkata and a BJP worker getting grievously attacked by the TMC goons for daring to campaign in South Kolkata
constituency.
Sanjeev Das a TMC worker who was severely injured in a factional fight on Saturday died subsequently, the police said.
The incident occurred at Baguiati area in the northern fringes of Kolkata. Das aka Potla was a history sheeter who worked actively for the TMC, locals. The police said on Monday that they had arrested 13 people in connection with his murder.
About 20 km down south Saraswati Sarkar, the president of the BJP Mahila Mandals unit in Kasba in Kolkata South parliamentary constituency sustained severe injuries when she was attacked with sticks and chopper by a group of local TMC men,
sources said.
“We were returning from party work when our party men were attacked by some TMC men at the instance of the local TMC councilor who runs all kinds of anti-people activities in the area attacked the men who were with us … two of my fellow party men fled and the third was being beaten up when I intervened … then they left him and started attacking me with rods and chopper … I sustained a deep cut on my head and have five stitches,”
Sarkar who was released from the hospital after initial treatment said adding, she was afraid that she would be killed if she went out of her house.
Following an FIR the police had arrested two persons involved in the attack, sources said. A local BJP leader said that the incident took place at Kasba in South Kolkata.
“They were accosted and then attacked … the BJP workers were pulled out of their car and beaten up and when Saraswati Sarkar who was in a different car intervened she two was attacked,” the BJP leader said adding Union Minister Smriti Irani had personally called up Sarkar and enquired after her health.
Former Union Minister and Raiganj MP Debashree Chowdhury who is contesting from South Kolkata seat, staged a protest outside the Anandapur police station before writing a complaint to the Election Commission of India.
“We have demanded thorough investigation into the matter and asked the ECI to see that such incidents are not repeated again … if this is the situation now then everyone knows what is going to happen subsequently.
