A Culinary Journey through Southern India

Whether you’re a connoisseur of South Indian cuisine or a curious food lover eager to explore new flavors, “South of Vindhyas” invites you on an unforgettable culinary journey through the vibrant landscapes of Southern India writes Sharmila Chand

Step into the vibrant world of Indian flavors from the south at “South of Vindhyas,” Mumbai’s premier restaurant located in the charming neighborhood of Vile Parle at the luxurious Orchid Hotel Mumbai.

Nestled within a Mangalore-styled estate house, this culinary haven offers an authentic and unforgettable experience celebrating the diverse cuisines of the four southern states that lie to the south of the Vindhya mountains — Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

As we step in to experience the rich flavors, we are greeted by the hostess at the entrance, dressed in a traditional Kerala attire leading us to our table.

Before our unique sit-down buffet ceremony begins, there comes a server with the traditional vessel to let us wash our hands. The warm water mixed with rose petals, is just perfect to let us start munching finger foods like a variety of papads etc.

Says Master Chef Bala Subramanian, “South of Vindhyas assures to take your taste buds on a delightful gastronomic adventure. Featuring a meticulously curated menu that highlights traditional regional specialties and inventive fusion creations, this restaurant stands as a true haven for food enthusiasts in pursuit of the finest cuisine inspired from the Southern India.”

Every dish is a masterpiece, meticulously prepared with handpicked, authentic ingredients sourced directly from the southern region. The passion and dedication of Chef Bala Subramanian shine through in each creation, capturing the essence of the South Indian culinary tradition. Do not miss the must-have dishes — the spicy KodiVepudu chicken and the aromatic Meen Biryani. Also, the Kalyera Pal Curry and the succulent lobster will transport you to food heaven. Some of the recipes are inspired by the mother and grandmother of Dr. Vithal Venkatesh Kamat, Chairman, Kamat Hotels India Ltd.

Thalis here are as good as Sit-Down Elaborate Buffets offering Veg, Non Veg and Seafood Thali options. Enjoy the extensive courses of starters, rasam, pickles, curd preparations, main course dishes and various kinds of parathas, phulkas, not to forget Appam, Kal Dosa, along with rice options. Wind up your meal with tempting desserts like Rice Payasam, Gulab Jamun, and a choice of ice cream.

The ambiance of South of Vindhyas is as captivating as the food itself. The dining hall, adorned with exquisite artworks inspired by the rich cultural heritage of the south, immerses you in an atmosphere reminiscent of a traditional Mangalore estate. As you savor the mouth watering delicacies, the soft melodies of southern instrumental music serenade your senses, completing the enchanting experience.

As we sip specially brewed South Indian Kapi, Vishal Kamat, Executive Director, Kamat Hotels India Limited expresses his joy with a smile, "Reflecting on nearly 25 years, South of Vindhyas unfolds an incredible journey. Specializing in authentic cuisine from the southern states of India, prepared with traditional methods, our commitment to classical recipes sets us apart. As the Executive Director of Kamat Hotels India Limited, I am proud of our loyal customer base and unique position in the restaurant scene. Each dish on our extensive menu carries its own tale, some named after my grandfather and father who cherished specific flavors. Additionally, our success extends to Cafe Vindhyas, smaller versions of SOV, now thriving in Lonavala, Manali, Shimla, and more. These cafes have become beloved spots, serving guests nostalgic and comforting culinary delights.
