A workshop held in Bemetara district in Chhattisgarh on Wednesday stressed the need to protect children from narcotics and exploitation.
The workshop was organized by the Child Protection Unit, the Women and Child Development Department and the Child Helpline 1098 Branch.
It was attended by students from Awadhesh Singh Kshatriya and Shailendra Kumar Soni School.
District Child Protection Officer Vyom Srivastava spoke in detail about COTPA, the Juvenile Justice Act and Child Marriage Prohibition Act of 2006.
He said the penalty for giving a child a narcotic drug or psychotropic substance was punishable by up to seven years in jail and a fine of Rs. 1 lakh.
As per the Child Labour Prohibition Act 1986, it is prohibited to employ children below 14 years of age and children below 18 years of age are not allowed to work in factories, he said.
