With the objective of effective implementation of Centrally-sponsored ‘Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme’ (RDSS) for strengthening the power distribution infrastructure, the Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has decided to increase the number of power distribution zones to 40 from the present 25. An officer of a chief engineer rank will head the newly-created zones.
New zone, Lucknow Electricity Supply Administration (LESA) Cis-Gomti, has been created in the state capital. The existing power distribution zones at Gorakhpur, Agra, Prayagraj, Varanasi, Bareilly, Aligarh, Kanpur, Meerut, Moradabad, and Saharanpur have been divided and a new zone has been created in each district.
The power distribution network in Ghaziabad has been divided into three zones as two new zones have been created.
RDSS, formulated by the Union energy ministry, is under implementation in UP since 2021-22 and will be completed by the end of 2025-26. The all-India outlay of the RDSS is over Rs 3 Lakh crore and expenditure in UP is estimated to be Rs 50,000 crore.
UP Energy Minister AK Sharma said here on Monday that with the objective of implementing the RDSS business plan, the power distribution infrastructure in UP was being expanded. He said that for the effective monitoring of the RDSS project, the number of power distribution zones was being increased.
“The expansion of the network will increase the efficiency of the power DISCOMs and also ensure prompt redressal of the grievances of consumers,” he said.
He added that the new zones had been created to strengthen the power distribution infrastructure in big towns.
The rest of the power distribution zones in districts like Bulandsahar, Ayodhya, NOIDA, Azamgarh, MIrzapur, Basti, Devipatan, Banda, Jhansi and Kesco Kanpur would remain the same, he added.
