Inclusiveness, proper implementation of laws, accessible support systems, making use of technology and above all behavioural changes and sensitive approach are essential for building an inclusive society where disability or gender will not be a barrier for leading a life of dignity, said eminent dignitaries joining a State level consultation on gender equality and disability.
The programme was organised under C20 G20 India Programme on Gender and Disability here by Bal Kalyan Sangh (BKS), Ranchi in collaboration with People’s Cultural Centre (PECUC), Bhubaneswar with support from Asia Foundation. Secretary, PECUC Ranjan Kumar Mohanty gave the welcome address, sharing the purpose of the workshop and chaired the opening session. Secretary, Bal Kalyan Sangh Sanjay Kumar Mishra spoke on the role of civil society organizations (CSOs) in advancing gender equality and disability rights. He stated that the best practices and innovative strategies applied by the CSOs will be shared to the G20 groups.
It is an opportunity for the CSOs to showcase their work to the Government. Country Head, The Asia Foundation Nandita Baruah joined online and spoke about the various thematic areas to promote gender equality and eliminate gender based violence and also bring forward the challenges and concerns.
A panel discussion on “Intersectionality and Inclusivity: The Confluence of Gender Equality and Disability Rights in Empowering Marginalized Communities” was also held. Prof Dr Narayan Chandra Pati from CHETNA moderated the session. Former Chairperson, OSCPCR and former Commissioner, Persons with Disability, Government of Odisha, Kasturi Mohapatra spoke. State Rehabilitation Officer Dr Subrat Dash discussed various initiatives taken by the SSEPD Department.
Gender Expert, NAWO Bisakha Bhanja spoke about the different challenges and discrimination faced by the disabled people. Secretary, Margdarshi and Regional Coordinator, Rehabilitation Council of India, Prof Dr Satya Mohapatra emphasized on adopting innovative cost effective technology to create a better life for persons with disability. CSOs from different districts shared their best practices and experiences.
