n Students should join the Indian Army and defend their motherland even at the cost of laying down their life as Brigadier Mohammad Usman did, said Jamia Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar on Monday after a wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate the death anniversary of Usman, Maha Vir Chakra winner.
The event was organised on Monday by a contingent from 50 (I) Para Brigade of the Indian Army at his memorial situated in Jamia Millia Islamia graveyard. Several serving and retired Army officers, NCC officers and cadets attended the ceremony. A wreath on behalf of the VC was also laid at the memorial by senior officials of the varsity.
Late Brigadier Mohammad Usman, also known as the saviour of Naushera (Naushera ka Sher), was responsible for the recapture of Jhangar and Naushera (Jammu & Kashmir) during the 1947-48 war with Pakistan. The gallant officer attained martyrdom on July 3, 1948 when an enemy artillery shell landed close to him in Naushera.
Najma mentioned that many Jamia students, including girls, take part in NCC so that they can later join the Army and serve the country.
