Late doctor R P Singh was the person who established orthopaedics as a speciality in then South Bihar, which is called Jharkhand now. He was a very good teacher, efficient clinician and a very successful Orthopaedic surgeon.
Dr R P Singh was born on 26th September 1924, in village Chasi, under Naubatpur Block of Patna district. He had a brilliant academic career. Graduated in 1949 from Patna Medical College he did his MS in Surgery and went to England to do FRCS. He did his fellowship from Edinburgh and came back to India, did his MS in orthopaedic surgery and became lecturer in orthopaedic surgery Department at PMCH Patna and later he joined at RMCH (now RIMSm Ranchi). Dr Singh was the founder of the department of orthopaedics at RMCH Ranchi and was working as professor and head of the department from 1972 till 1983, his year of retirement.
He organised the state conference of arthritis and has been its president and in 1974 he organised the national conference of orthopaedic surgeons of India. He served as president of Bihar State orthopaedic surgeons Association for many years. Also, he was founder secretary of Bihar State orthopaedic surgeons Association.
Dr Singh died of a massive heart attack on 3rd October in 2001, at Apollo Hospital Ranchi.
He established the first private nursing Home in Ranchi at Bariatu in 1964,which was upgraded to RPS Hospital by his family members in 2015. The hospital is now a super speciality Hospital and giving flawless service to the ailing masses by a dedicated team of doctors, besides his two sons, both daughters in law and grandchildren.
