CPI (ML) criticizes police action against protesting wrestlers

Friday, 05 May 2023 | PNS | Lucknow

The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) condemned the cane-charge by the police on the protesting wrestlers at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Wednesday night and said it was unfortunate that the Supreme Court had closed the case of wrestlers now.

The party said that the accused MP, Brij Bhushan, was getting open protection of the Central government and that was why the Delhi Police did not act against him despite registration of a report on the direction of the Supreme Court and on the complaint of women sportspersons.

“Instead of arresting the accused, the complainants are being harassed. It is extremely unfortunate that the Supreme Court has closed the case file of the wrestlers at such a critical time. This has shaken the hope of justice,” CPI (ML) state secretary Sudhakar Yadav said.

He said that the role of the Central government and Delhi Police in the complaint of sexual harassment of women wrestlers was shameful.

“Despite the POCSO Act being invoked, the accused is walking free and has been giving interviews in the media. Dozens of cases under serious sections of the Indian Penal Code have already been registered against him, but being from the ruling party, he was being spared. This travesty of law is happening in the capital of the country. In such a situation, there is only support for the people's movement,” he said.

In another statement, the CPI (ML) state secretary, reacting to the news of the killing of gangster Anil Dujana by STF, said that the Narendra Modi government had made UP an encounter state.
