Using two methods, angioplasty was conducted on a 72-year-old patient to remove the calcified blockage of the veins of the heart at the Advanced Cardiac Institute (ACI) of the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College here.
According to Dr Smit Srivastava, the Head of Department of Cardiology, it was for the first time in the country that the two methods were used.
These include shockwave intravascular lithotripsy and excimer coronary laser atherectomy. They broke the blockage (calcified) in the veins of the heart and removed it, an official communication said on Monday.
Srivastava said the Mahasamund resident's heart was working only up to 30 percent when he was admitted. After the process of first blasting the blockage and removing it, the patient is on the recovery path.
