The two-day 24th Odisha Science and Environment Congress ended at the Berhampur University on Tuesday. It was jointly organised by the BU and the Odisha Environmental Society (OES).
The primary objective of the event was to foster innovative research initiatives addressing pressing global environmental concerns. Issues like climate change, pollution in its various forms, deforestation, biodiversity loss, ozone layer depletion, and other critical challenges were discussed, emphasizing the imminent threat they pose to the planet's existence, said the organisers.
An essential milestone marked the occasion as an MoU was inked between BU and the Bay of Bengal Programme, Chennai. Notable figures present on the occasion included OES president Professor Sundar Narayan Patro, Chairman of PG Council, BU, Professor SK Baral, convener of the Congress Professor Jayakrushna Panigarahy, and BU’s Environmental Science Department HoD Professor B Anjan Kumar Prusty.
Eminent scientists stressed the crucial role of science and technology in combating the issues. They called upon young researchers to champion sustainable solutions, underscoring the significance of preserving the planet's natural magnificence.
The inaugural session welcomed Professor P Krishnan as the chief guest and New Delhi’s Indraprastha University former Dean Professor N C Gupta as the guest of honour. BU Vice-Chancellor Professor Geetanjali Dash presided over the ceremony.
Additionally, four distinguished scientists Professor Ashok Kumar Mahapatra, Professor Sunil Kumar Sarangi, Professor Gauri Shankar Tripathy and Professor Malaya Kumar Mishra were honoured for their lifetime contributions to science and technology.
Professor Satyanarayan Sahu from the Chemistry Department delivered the vote of thanks. Over the two days, invited scientists and young researchers presented their research findings. The event drew over 400 participants from various universities, research institutes in the State and beyond.
