No lockdown during G20: Police

Wednesday, 06 September 2023 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

The Delhi Police clarified on Tuesday that the National Capital will remain open during the G20 Summit, with the exception of a portion of the area under the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).

All medical shops, grocery stores, milk booths, and vegetable/fruit shops will continue to operate throughout Delhi, including New Delhi. The police, in various posts on the microblogging site X, assured that essential services such as milk booths and hospitals will remain functional in the New Delhi area.

“The entire Delhi is open. Only a small part of the NDMC will have restrictions... We want to emphasise that restrictions are limited to a small portion of the NDMC area. Do not believe in rumors,” stated the Delhi Police in one post.

In another post, the police clarified that although commercial activities are banned between September 8 and 10, all essential services, such as milk booths, medical shops, hospitals, and other services falling under the essential category, will remain operational in the New Delhi area.

Government employees, media personnel, medical practitioners, and paramedics will be allowed to use both private and government vehicles within the Controlled Zone.

The Delhi Traffic Police has compiled a list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) about traffic regulations in the city during the G20 Summit. However, the police noted that despite sharing the traffic advisory on social media handles and the Delhi Traffic Police website, they are still receiving numerous queries.

General traffic, including all types of commercial vehicles and buses already present in Delhi, will be allowed on the Ring Road and the road network beyond the Ring Road towards the borders of Delhi.

Passengers will be able to travel to the airport, railway stations, and ISBTs as these facilities will remain operational during the G20 Summit. Bonafide residents and authorised vehicles will be permitted to move within the New Delhi districts.

In the New Delhi district, all online delivery services, except for medicines, will be suspended during the G20 Summit, as announced by the Delhi Police on Monday.

“Essential services, such as postal and medical services, as well as sample collections by path labs, will be allowed throughout Delhi. Commercial activities will not be permitted in the New Delhi area, and online delivery services will also be prohibited, except for medicine deliveries,” stated Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) SS Yadav on Monday. Valid permissions granted for essential services will be honored, he added.

The Delhi Police has commenced vehicle checks at various locations across Delhi for G20 Summit scheduled for September 9 and 10. Surprise checks were conducted at India Gate and other parts of the city between Monday night and early Tuesday.

Police personnel were observed conducting thorough vehicle inspections. Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Deependra Pathak assured that adequate arrangements have been made to ensure that Delhi residents do not encounter any inconvenience during the G20 summit. He emphasised the real-time coordination between the police, Central agencies, and the Special Branch.

“Whenever we receive any information or assessments, we organise accordingly. Our primary focus is to ensure that citizens do not face any inconvenience, but we also request citizens to cooperate with the police personnel,” he stated.

“G20 is a highly prestigious summit for India and Delhi, and we take great pride in it. The Delhi Police has the responsibility for safety, security, and maintaining law and order, and we see it as a challenge. We are planning it with professional excellence and executing it on the ground.

“We have different segments of the Delhi Police with specific roles for the summit area. In addition, we have the responsibility for maintaining law and order in other parts of the city, and we have made plans and are conducting rehearsals for that,” he added.
