Dog goes missing, Delhi HC former judge fumes

Sunday, 23 July 2023 | Rajesh Kumar | New Delhi

Former Delhi High Court Justice Gaurang Kanth has lodged a formal complaint to the Delhi Police (Security) about the “disappearance” of his beloved pet dog, a result of the negligence displayed by his security staff stationed at his office bungalow in the prestigious Lutyens’ zone.

The incident occurred when the assigned security personnel failed to lock the door of his residence, allowing his dog to wander off. In addition to the distress caused by the loss of his pet, Justice Kanth raised serious apprehensions regarding the lax approach of the Delhi Police security personnel and its potential threat to his life.

In a letter addressed to Joint Commissioner of Police (Security) Mangesh Kashyap, Justice Kanth also forwarded the complaint to Dr Sujoy Thaosen, DG CRPF, and Rajesh Kumar, IG (administration) CRPF.

The matter has drawn attention from various quarters, but Delhi police officials have so far refrained from commenting on it.

Justice Kanth expressed his emotional turmoil in the letter, dated July 12, stating, “I am writing this letter with a lot of pain and anguish. Due to the lack of dedication and incompetence of the officers assigned to secure my official bungalow, I have lost my beloved pet dog. Despite my repeated instructions to keep the door locked, the security officials at my residence have failed to comply with my directives and uphold their professional duties.”

He further highlighted the gravity of the situation, emphasizing, “Such dereliction of duty and incompetence demands immediate attention, as it poses a grave danger to my life and liberty. The carelessness displayed by the security personnel may lead to untoward incidents at my residence, and I am deeply concerned for my safety.”

Justice Kanth also pointed out the lapses in security measures, stating, “The lack of vigilance at the gate and the absence of dedication in monitoring the movement of people in and out of my residence is intolerable. I urgently request you to suspend the officers responsible for this misconduct, as they do not meet the standards expected of government servants. A thorough investigation into this matter, which could have posed a serious threat to my and my family’s life, is imperative.”

In concluding his letter, Justice Kanth set a deadline for action, asserting, “I expect an action taken report to be submitted within 3 (three) working days from today
