A third-year student of Shiv Nadar University in Greater Noida shot dead a female classmate, after which he returned to his room at the boy’s hostel and allegedly shot himself around 1.30 pm on the university campus in Dadri police station area of Greater Noida, a police spokesperson said.
The police said the youth, identified as Anuj, died on the spot and the girl was declared brought dead at Yatharth hospital. Both were pursuing Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and were aged around 21 years and knew each other well. But the cause of the incident is yet to be ascertained, police said.
The youth was a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district, while the girl, identified as Neha Chaurasiya, was from Kanpur.
Eyewitnesses said Anuj and Neha were seen together near the dining hall. They said the duo were engaged in a conversation and even hugged each other. Suddenly, Anuj pulled out a pistol and shot Neha, they said, adding that he then rushed to his hostel room and shot himself death.
Neha was rushed to hospital but was declared brought dead. DCP (Greater Noida) Saad Miya Khan said, “We got to know that an incident took place at Shiv Nadar University where a male student shot a female student.”
Both the students were good friends but had some disputes of late, Khan said. The relatives of the duo have been informed and police teams have secured the incident spot, police said.
“A country-made pistol was recovered from the spot. The student had died on spot. During preliminary inquiry, it has been found that the students were in a relationship for a long time but recently their relations had turned sour,” police said.
The Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence said, “The matter is currently under investigation by the authorities and we are closely monitoring the situation. All other residents of the campus are safe. Our utmost priority is the safety and well-being of our students, employees, and the entire community.” “We are fully cooperating with the authorities in their investigation. Our deep and heartfelt condolences go out to the affected families and we are supporting them in every way possible at this difficult time,” it added.
“The university had gone on summer break from May 17, but both the students had stayed back in their hostels as their convocation was due. The students’ sessions had come to a close and they were going to graduate from the university,” said an official part of the investigation.
He said the incident was captured in the CCTV cameras of the dining hall.
