Ending toll for private four-wheelers by implementing a one-time lump sum fee at the time of vehicle purchase can ensure a safer and efficient traffic flow

Toll booths have become hotspots for conflicts, delays, and disputes, undermining efficient traffic flow and safety. The booths have become a common place for clashes, arguments, and even tragic incidents.

The introduction of FASTag has also not given the desired result as far as convenience is concerned to the commuter and there is an urgent need for relook as a frequent traveller. A sustainable and equitable alternative is needed to mitigate the issue and create a more harmonious driving environment.

I was forced to think, although I am not an expert on toll collection as revenue for Government, after a recent tragic incident where a toll gate operator Pavan Naik was killed on duty in the wee hours of June 5, 2023, in Karnataka when the FASTag payment didn’t go through swiftly, leading to a delay in the lifting of the bar at the gate. Naik was working at the Bengaluru-Mysore Seshagiri toll near Bidadi. There was a delay in the tax getting deducted from the car’s FASTag. This forced the car to wait longer behind the gate and led to the tragic incident.

I suggest the elimination of toll collection for private four-wheelers by implementing a one-time lump sum fee at the time of vehicle purchase, like Road Tax.

Such a transformative approach not only addresses issues of congestion, fuel consumption, and pollution but also ensures a harmonious driving experience while bolstering the economy.

Paying upfront a lifetime tax of Rs 5,000 or Rs 10,000 while purchasing a four-wheeler for at least Rs 3 lakh to Rs 4 lakh and above won’t be a major issue. At the same time, it will give a huge amount to the Government exchequer for which it has to wait for years.

By replacing toll collection with a one-time lump sum fee, collected at the time of vehicle purchase, we can address the challenges associated with toll booths and unlock numerous benefits mentioned below.

Congestion Alleviation: The elimination of toll booths will streamline traffic flow, reducing congestion and travel times. With no interruptions caused by toll collection, vehicles can seamlessly move through roadways, enhancing overall efficiency and productivity. Smoother traffic flow will lead to fewer bottlenecks, alleviating the frustration and delays often experienced at toll booths.

Fuel Conservation: Removing toll booths eliminates the need for vehicles to stop and idle, resulting in substantial fuel savings. By enabling a continuous flow of traffic, fuel consumption decreases, leading to cost savings for individual motorists. Additionally, reduced fuel usage translates into a positive environmental impact, as it contributes to lower carbon emissions and air pollution.

Pollution Reduction: The reduction of idle time at toll booths significantly curtails emissions of greenhouse gases and harmful pollutants. Improved air quality not only benefits public health but also fosters a more sustainable ecosystem. By implementing the lump sum road tax, we can contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for current and future generations.

Economic Advantages: Transitioning from toll collection to a one-time lump sum fee system carries economic benefits. The removal of toll booths eliminates administrative and operational costs associated with toll collection infrastructure. These cost savings can be directed towards more productive endeavours, such as infrastructure development, road maintenance, and public transportation improvements. Moreover, the reduction in traffic congestion leads to enhanced productivity, fuelling economic growth.

To conclude I can say ending toll collection for private four-wheelers by implementing a one-time lump sum fee at the time of vehicle purchase represents a pivotal step towards a safer, more efficient, and economically thriving transportation system.
