Keeping up with rapidly changing world can feel daunting to many. Helping people in their work can translate to a healthier business
Advancements in technology have touched our lives in every way possible, making them more convenient, safe and open to a world of possibilities. However the technology landscape continues to evolve at blinding speeds. Especially in a world that’s always on and digitally connected to everything everywhere, one cannot deny that sometimes, things might feel a little overwhelming. This becomes more complex for tech professionals who might feel the need to learn, unlearn, adapt and upskill quickly and constantly. All this while being bombarded with information and news through social media and other countless apps on our phones. While I type this, I’ve already received seven notifications on my phone. Ah, the irony!
At such times a strong focus on one’s personal wellbeing becomes super critical. Mental health specifically is an area that needs attention and is something we need to talk about more often and more openly. Given many of us spend the good part of our day in our workplaces, it becomes all the more important for organizations to step in and help their employees on their wellbeing journeys, in a manner that is supportive and inclusive. Here are a few ways in which organizations can help build a workplace that prioritizes the well-being of its people:
Driving change top down: This starts with putting people first in everything an organization does and has to be driven top down. When the leadership sets the tone and speaks freely about topics and experiences about mental health, it helps create an environment where employees feel safe, supported and understood. Thoughtful policies and practices: Programs and policies need to be implemented with an aim to enable psychological safety, work-life balance and flexibility options that suit the diverse needs of people. Employees should be able to disconnect when they need to, and focus on their health.
A holistic approach to wellness: Our well-being has many facets and focusing on mental health only might be just a battle partially won. It is important to approach wellness holistically and address the mental, physical, social and financial aspects of wellness. A healthy body, a supportive social circle and financial security enhance our overall well-being. This should be a prime consideration while designing employee policies and practices.
Access to mental health services: For many who struggle with mental health, finding the right professional to talk to may become a challenge. Providing and promoting easy access to good mental health services such as counselling makes it simple and hassle-free for employees to find and seek support, enabling them to take that precious first step in their mental health journeys. For example, at Mastercard, we offer free counselling services for employees and their dependents, including a confidential 24/7 emergency hotline to seek support at critical moments.
Build awareness and supportive allies: Regular sessions and communication about mental health not only help those in need but also make everyone more aware and sensitive to the topic of mental health. Empowering people to become supportive allies to their colleagues is one of the best ways to foster a culture of well-being.
So step back, take a break, and acknowledge that keeping up with the rapidly changing, complex and interconnected world can feel daunting to many. Everyone’s pace might be different. And we all should do what we can to step in and help ourselves and others in their wellbeing journeys. It goes without saying that besides immense personal benefits, happier employees surely translate to healthier business and a healthier nation. Let us add a new definition of the ‘Future of Work’ that prioritizes mental wellness for all employees.
