Resumption of train service on newly gauged converted rail line between Jaynagar-Janakpur Dham-Kurtha will be inaugurated through video conferencing from Hyderabad House, New Delhi by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Nepal, Sher Bahadur Deuwa on 02 April 2022. India and Nepal will once again be connected by railways on 02nd April. It will not only be a rail service, but it will also play an important role as a means of deepening the age-old bilateral ties of the two countries.
It may be noted that under the Jaynagar-Bijalpura-Bardibas (69.08 km) rail project under construction between India and Nepal at an estimated cost of about Rs 784 crore, in the first phase, train services will be restored on the newly gauged 34.50 km long Jaynagar-Janakpur Dham/Kurtha (Nepal) rail section. In the first phase of this project, Jayanagar station in Madhubani district of Bihar is being connected with Kurtha in Nepal. The work of about 18 km long railway line from Kurtha to Bijalpura has also been almost completed while the work of construction of about 16 km long railway line from Bijalpura to Bardibas will be started after the land acquisition by the Government of Nepal. This project will prove to be a milestone for both the countries.
In the year 1937, the operation of trains on narrow gauge between Jayanagar in India and Baijalpur in Nepal was started. In Nepal in the year 2001, due to the flooding of some railway bridges, the train service beyond Janakpur had to be stopped while the train service from Janakpur to Jaynagar continued till March 2014.
The Jaynagar-Bijalpura-Bardibas rail project passes through the Madhubani district of Bihar and the agricultural and densely populated districts of Dhanusa, Mahottari and Siraha in Nepal. In the first phase, Inerva Station, Khajuri Station, Mahinathpur Halt, Baidehi Station, Careha Halt, Janakpur Dham Station have been built between the complete Jayanagar-Kurtha railway section. Custom checking points have been made on this railway line at Jayanagar in India and Innerva stations of Nepal.
