The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) from the Sundargarh district Superintendent of Police (SP) and the Odisha Energy Secretary on the electrocution of two budding hockey players in the district.
Taking cognisance of a petition filed by human rights active and lawyer Radhakanta Tripathy, the NHRC passed the order.
Tripathy in his petition alleged that the deceased Sujjal Ekka (15)of Panratoli Kukuda village and Birendra Kujur (17) Jhagarpur village came in contact with a snapped live electric wire and were electrocuted.
Tripathy blamed the players’ death on the negligence of the Energy Department and sought the commission’s intervention.
The NHRC sought an ATR from the Sundargarh SP and the Energy Secretary within four weeks.
In default, the commission warned of invoking coercive process under Section 13 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.
