Similar to the lines of Mount Road in Chennai and Nandan Kanan Road in Bhubaneshwar, Jamshedpur will also get its ‘Iconic Road’. Initial plans are being made to strengthen the East-West Corridor. City’s civic provider company Tata Steel UISL (erstwhile JUSCO) is working on a plan to develop a road that will connect Baridih-Agrico Roundabout to Sakchi to Straight Mile Road to Dhatkidih to Kadma Market.
Addressing a virtual press meet on Saturday, Tarun Daga, managing director, Tata Steel UISL, said: “ We need to share a thought that may be a vision for all stakeholders to pursue. Every major city is built around a main arterial road which becomes iconic and part of history for example, the Mount Road in Chennai, the Nandan Kanan Road in Bhubaneshwar. For Jamshedpur as well, the original city planners 100 years ago had possibly conceived an East-West Corridor to serve the traffic flow and we can work on strengthening this network and create an iconic road from Baridih-Agrico Roundabout to Sakchi to Straight Mile Road to Dhatkidih to Kadma Market. We hope the dream is shared by all stakeholders”.
Sharing the company’s steps being taken to improve road infrastructure, he said approx. 5 Kms roads per year were realigned and widened during FY10 to FY21 in Jamshedpur.
“ We would like to highlight that through the efforts of Tata Steel and Government of Jharkhand, the connectivity of Jamshedpur with outside through roads has improved from 10 lanes to 32 lanes in last three decades, with three new routes created and capacity of other routes has been enhanced,” informed the managing director.
Sharing the company's future plans for the road network, Daga said that after the on-going engagement and plans are completed, the following roads are in the planning stage: CH Area Road#1; Central Avenue Road; 6 Laning of Cement plant road; Sonari Airport to Domuhani Bridge. In addition to the above, we are working on plans to modernise the following road infrastructure as well: Bhalubasha Bridge: Rehabilitation work has started and likely to be completed in 2022, Mango Bridge: few improvements are planned and will be completed by March 22. Howrah Bridge: detailed engineering work for rehabilitation is in progress, likely to be completed in 2022, based on which it may be expected to be taken up for improvements in 2023. Marine Drive: The road is developed over a slag filled stretch. With aging, there are depressions on some stretches. Improving this stretch will need continuous attention.
Based on traffic density assessment and decongestion plans, the company has reviewed and redesigned central verges and junctions to ease traffic movement; improved intersection, corridor developments; undertook widening of roads and upgradation of roads with multiple lanes for better traffic management. Approximately 56 kms of roads were realigned and constructed.
