The Godhan Nyay Yojana -- a first-of-its-kind scheme in the country -- launched by the Chhattisgarh government to improve the economic condition of cattle owners is opening new doors of employment for people in Naxalite-hit Dantewada district.
Under this scheme, the government procures cow dung to manufacture vermicompost, which is purchased by farmers as well as government departments.
Gauthans and pastures have been constructed under the scheme at Gram Panchayats of Dantewada district to boost employment at the local level and for cattle owners.
The scheme not only boosts incomes but also strengthens the rural economy.
The Gauthans have become a centre of production and sales with the production of earthworm manure and super compost.
Members of Self-Help Groups are engaged in producing manure from the cow dung purchased under the scheme. The women in these groups earn good profits by selling the organic manure.
So far 79,377.29 quintals of cow dung worth Rs 158.75 lakhs have been bought. A total of 18,08,944 kg of vermicompost and 718,381 kg of super compost have been produced.
Similarly, 14,24,071 kg of vermicompost and 66,183 kg of super compost have been sold. The increased use of organic manure is increaces crop production.
