Director-General of Uttar Pradesh Police Devendra Singh Chauhan unveiled the insignia of UP Police here at Police Headquarters on Tuesday.
The UP Police is one of the oldest police departments in India and the largest police force in the world, with approximately 74 district police departments and four commissionerates. Established in 1863 as the Office of the Inspector General of Police of the United Provinces, under the Police Act 1861, it is 159 years old now. For its outstanding performance in all areas of police work, the UP Police were given the President’s Colour Award on November 13 1952 by the then prime minister.
“The UP Police have the distinction of being the first police force in the country to have received this honour. It is a matter of great prestige to get such an honor first among the police forces of the country,” the official spokesman claimed.
“Continuous efforts are being made for more effective policing on the auspicious occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. On August 15 earlier this year, we decided to give a logo to the entire ranks and files of UP Police and our uniforms are being decorated with these colours of pride today,” the DGP claimed while releasing the insignia of UP police here on Tuesday.
