UP Govt to give new dimension to Namami Gange project

Wednesday, 06 April 2022 | PNS | Lucknow

Keeping up with their promise of making the rivers of Uttar Pradesh clean, the Yogi Government 2.0 has announced to introduce several new dimensions to its ambitious Namami Gange project.

The government has planned to revive the extinct wells and convert them into recharging wells, and at the same time, to bring to life the ponds, and to establish village forests on their banks. The plan also includes rejuvenating 19 of 22 tributaries of the Gomti river that have dried up.

Social and government organisations like Lok Bharti and Nehru Yuva Kendra have come together to launch a campaign to make people aware and revive the rivers. This campaign is scheduled to start on April 6 across the state and will last up to May 3.

Multiple organisations will work together to make these things accessible to the people through awareness. Not only this, a campaign to plant peepal, banyan, pakar, sycamore and mango trees on the banks of the rivers will also take place. To maintain the extinct wells and convert them into recharging wells, arrangements will be made to clean the wells and redirect the rainwater inside them.

“Villagers will also be taught to plant useful and medicinal plants, thereby making village forests on the banks of the ponds,” a government spokesman said.

It is worth mentioning that Lok Bharti and Nehru Yuva Kendra, in collaboration with Namami Gange department, are going to start the river and water resource conservation campaign from Fatehpur on April 6. The programme of cleanliness of rivers and oath ceremony will be done at Om Ghat Block, Bhitora.

On April 7, this event will be organised in the form of a water source festival in Lakhimpur Kheri at Takshka river Bhuiya Dev Ghat Biharipur. Similarly, a strategy has been prepared to organise events in the villages situated on the banks of rivers that have become extinct across the state.
