Congress slams Govt for price hike, terms BJP’s poll win ‘licence’ to loot

Sunday, 03 April 2022 | PNS | New Delhi

The Congress on Saturday slammed the government on Saturday for price hikes and alleged that the electoral victory is a "licence" for the Modi Government to loot the country.

“The price rise imposed by the Modi government with effect from April 1st has shattered the budgets of every household in India” Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said at the AICC press conference.

Attacking the Government over the hike in petrol and diesel, Surjewala said this hike is the daily good morning gift to the people. He reminded Saturday is the 10th increase in prices of Petrol and Diesel in the last 12 days.

“As per the Govt. of India's Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell, consumption of petrol in the year 2020–21 was 27,969 thousand metric tonnes. At a price increase of 27.20/litre, the additional yearly burden on people comes to 220,138 crores, " Surjewala said.

The Congress said price and construction costs have gone up 15 percent more in April due to rising costs of construction materials such as steel, cement, bricks, copper, sanitary fittings, wood, and steel prices have aalso increased 30 percent from March 2021 to March 2022.

Surjewala further alleged that the Modi government is taking "revenge" by taxing farmers. “The price of a DAP bag of 50 kg has been increased by Rs 150 per bag, taking it from Rs 1200 to Rs 1350 per bag, which puts an additional burden on farmers of 23,600 crores, "he said.

“Prices have not increased in every single sphere of a citizen's life. The Modi government remains responsible for this theft, " Surjewala alleged.
