CoE in Human-Centered Computing at IIITD

The Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIITD) has established a new Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Human-Centered Computing (HCC).

The CoE will focus on teaching relevant courses on human-centered computing and will also facilitate research collaborations, capacity building, and exchange of researchers and experts between the European Union and India.

The CoE is established as part of the EU Erasmus+ Design and Innovation Capacity Building project that brings together IIITD, World University Of Design and Regional Institute of Management and Technology from India; and University of Aegean, Greece, Brunel University, UK, and Politecnico di Milano, Italy, and CREATHIDEV from Europe which are anchoring the activities under this project from India and the EU respectively.

The HCC combines design principles with computing to help develop systems that support human capabilities and cater to human needs. For example, researchers developed a mobile-based learning platform for health workers.

The platform is designed so that it becomes easy to use by community health workers who have low technology exposure.  CoE aims to develop design and technology solutions.

Students of ABWA develop smart wrist band

Students of one of the leading international schools in Mumbai, Aditya Birla World Academy robotics team called Binary Bolts have designed an innovative device SAATHI — Your Fitness Companion.

It is a smart wrist band that has been developed with the objective of motivating the elderly citizens to prioritize their health. The idea was developed for the First Robotics Competition Qualcomm Innovation Challenge where these students won a semi-finalist award. The team took the idea further by developing prototypes of the watch and conducted efficacy research.

The students wrote a white paper based on their invention and it was published in the International Journal of Software & Hardware Research in Engineering (IJSHRE).

The students feel that it has become crucial for elderly citizens to take care of their physical and social wellbeing and the core aim of the project was to encourage the elderly to stay active with friends and family with the help of technology that offers simple and convenient use.

It can be easily paired with a mobile app. There are two primary parts: a band and an app.

Research Team Identifies gene/protein variation

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras-led International Research Team has identified a gene/protein variation present among Indians and other South Asians that increased their risk of diabetes, heart attacks and hypertension.

This multi-institutional and multi-disciplinary team of researchers found that this variation was present in approximately 15 per cent of Indian and other South Asian populations.

The researchers also found that people carrying this variant are 1.5 times more likely to have hypertension, type 2 Diabetes, and coronary artery disease. This combination could account for the higher prevalence of metabolic diseases among Indians and other South Asians.

Talking about practical applications of this research, Professor Nitish Mahapatra said: “This study has implications in the area of diagnostics and personalised medicine. For example, our research findings may help in identifying individuals who may be susceptible to type 2 Diabetes. This should be useful for people with family history of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases for preventive healthcare and better management of disease.”
