For this year’s RathYatra on July 12, priests of the Jagannath Temple worshipped three wooden logs near the shrine’s administration office for construction of chariots on the auspicious occasion of Basant Panchami on Tuesday. The hereditary carpenters applied their gadgets to start works symbolically.

Saraswati Puja symbolises day one of the chariots construction. As per the tradition, before the rituals, three Agyanmalas (garlands of approval) from the temple came to the wood worship place. The logs are used as axels with each of the three chariots. The second-phase construction will start on another auspicious occasion, Akshaya Trutiya, fallin on May 15 this year, when wheels works will begin.Traditionally, Basant Panchami is the start of the RathYatra process.
