Former BJP MP and Jharkhand BJP's first state president Dukha Bhagat passed away losing his battle against Covid-19 on Friday. He was admitted at RIMS, Ranchi after being infected and died during treatment. Prominent figures of the State including, Governor Droupadi Murmu, CM Hemant Soren, Union Minister Arjun Munda and others have mourned his death. BJP leaders have termed the death of Dukha Bhagat a major loss for the BJP State Unit.
Prof. Dukha Bhagat was one of the leaders who made the BJP stand in Jharkhand. Dukha Bhagat, a native of Lohardaga district, was staying in Ashok Nagar, Ranchi for many years. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and three sons. Bhagat was on dialysis. After being Covid-19 positive he tried admission in many private hospitals, but could not get a bed, said his kin. Eventually, due to the initiative of MP Sanjay Seth, he got a bed in RIMS, where he died during treatment.
Born in 1953 in Lohardaga, Dukha Bhagat came into the limelight when he won by defeating veteran Congress leader and minister Rameshwar Oraon in the Lok Sabha elections. Dukha Bhagat was the MP of Lohardaga from 1999 to 2004. He was very active in the movement for a separate State and became the first State president of BJP after the formation of Jharkhand. He later took a break from active politics due to poor health.
