Police have seized 88 kg cannabis valued Rs 17.60 lakh in Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund district that was smuggled across the Jonk river close to the Odisha border, police said on Saturday.
Those who brought the contraband from Odisha escaped by diving into the river from their boat.
Mahasamund Additional Superintendent of Police Megha Tembhurkar told The Pioneer they were looking for Devlal Bariha (35) of Lilesar Chowki village in the district.
On Friday night, he brought the consignment on a boat without realizing that the police had laid a trap on the bank of the river at Lilesar Ghat. When he saw the police, he dumped the contraband into the river and himself jumped into the water and swam away, the officer Police, however, recovered 88 kg of cannabis and some clothes.
