GDMC designated as centre of excellence

Thursday, 18 June 2020 | PNS | Dehradun

The Government of India (GoI) has designated the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC), Dehradun as ‘Centre of excellence for clinical management of Covid-19’ in the State.

The GDMC is the only centre in the state that has been given the honour. After this declaration, the secretary medical health and family welfare department, Uttarakhand, Amit Singh Negi has nominated the Head of Department (HoD) of Respiratory medicine, Dr Anurag Agarwal as the nodal officer for the centre for excellence.

The centre would now be directly linked with other such centres of the country and the protocols of the clinical management of the Covid-19 would be followed here.

The procedure followed here would be implemented in other Covid-19 treatment centres of the state. At the central level, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi is functioning as a centre of excellence.  The Principal of GDMC, Dr Ashutosh Sayana said that all the protocols of clinical management of Covid-19 patients would be followed in GDMC and it would act as a model centre in the state.

The GDMC was the first Covid-19 treatment centre in Uttarakhand. The first Covid-19 patient was detected in the state on March 15 when a trainee officer of Indian Forest Service (IFS) was found affected by the disease.  Later two more trainees were found positive. These initial cases were admitted and treated at GDMC.

This dedicated Covid-19 hospital has so far admitted 362 patients of the disease and hundreds of suspected patients which is highest in the state. Out of these patients, 268 have so far recovered and have been discharged from the hospital. So far four patients of the disease have died in this hospital.

The recovery rate of the GDMC is 74.03 percent which is much better than the state average of 61.96 percent and national average of 52.80 percent. The death rate at 1.10 percent too is better than the state and national average.  The hospital is at present catering 90 active patients. The laboratory of GDMC has so far tested swab samples of 6873 suspected patients.
