Jamia Millia tops Central varsity rankings

Friday, 14 August 2020 | PNS | New Delhi

Jamia Millia Islamia has secured top spot in the Central university rankings released by the Education Ministry. Jamia is followed by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Arunachal Pradesh, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and Aligarh Muslim University AMU in that order.

Jamia, JNU, and AMU had witnessed huge unrest due to different issues within their campuses during the last academic session.

In June this year, Jamia had featured in the top ten list of National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2020 released by HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank.

Jamia topped among 40 Central universities in the grading/scoring of performance in which it had a score of 90 per cent. The Rajiv Gandhi University of Arunachal Pradesh scored 83, JNU 82 and AMU got 78 per cent.

“The Central University ranking is based on a tri-party evaluation signed between the university, the HRD Ministry and the University Grants Commission (UGC). All the universities were required to sign a tripartite MoU for continuous evaluation,” said an Education Ministry official.

Jamia was the first university in 2017 to sign this MoU and present itself for performance evaluation, said an Education Ministry official.

The ranking was also based on parameters like the number of students who get admitted each year in UG, PG, PhD and MPhil courses. It also took into account the range of diversity among students in terms of the percentage of female students as well as students from other States and countries.

The quality of faculty, student-teacher ratio, teacher vacancy also played a part in determining the score.

In a statement Jamia said the university did well on parameters of governance, finance, nationwide and worldwide rankings like NIRF, NAAC and QS in addition to co-curricular and extracurricular actions.

Jamia Vice-Chancellor Professor Najma Akhtar attributed the achievement to “high-quality instructing, related and centered analysis of highest high quality and the improved notion of the college”. She said she hoped to enhance efficiency in the coming years.

Jamia has been through several tumultuous months ever since students protesting the CAA were assaulted on the campus which eventually led to classes being suspended for around three weeks. This was then followed by the Covid-19 outbreak across the country due to which all educational institutions were forced shut on March 16. Similarly, huge unrest was witnessed in the JNU over several issues including a hike of fees that led to protests and clashes both within and outside the campus by students.
