The first Deceased Donor Liver Transplantation (DDLT) has been successfully performed at SRM Medical College Hospital, Kattankulathur near Chennai by doctors from Gleneagles Global Health City.
A 46-year-old male from Andhra Pradesh was diagnosed with end-stage liver disease and was under medical management initially but this failed later. Due to the decompensated liver disease status and failure of medical therapy, doctors advised the patient for urgent liver transplant. As he did not have the matching liver donor, he was listed for deceased donor liver transplantation.
The procedure was performed as a part of the collaboration between SRM and Gleneagles Global, following a MoU signed by them.
Dr Vivek Vij, director of Liver Transplant and HPB surgery, Gleneagles Global and his team performed the transplant. The patient made remarkable recovery.
Speaking about the partnership with SRM, Dr Joy Varghese, director of Hepatology and Transplant Hepatology, said, “The association will see Gleneagles Global, Chennai, bring its top-notch emergency services, which will benefit the local residents.”
“Once the patient is diagnosed with the chronic liver diseases, initial treatment of optimal medical therapy can help them to stabilise but on decompensating, even advanced medical therapy does not work and the only option that we are left with is liver transplantation,” said Dr Vivek.
