Retina operation has started at the Capital Hospital from May 26 under the Sunetra Yojana, which was launched by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in January. This is first time that this surgery is carried out in a Government hospital.
Capital Hospital ophthalmologist Dr Ashwini Meherda had gone to the AIIMS, New Delhi for the necessary training, after which the operation has started. Dr Meherda said 10 to 15 cataract operations are being carried out in a day. Notablyh, for a retina operation, a person spends Rs 60-70,000 in a private hospital, but in the Capital Hospital the service free of cost.
Besides, injections used for the glaucoma suffering patients are also provided free. The cost of injections is estimated to be Rs 20-25,000 in the market.
