India and Germany are collaborating on the mitigation of human-wildlife conflict in three Indian States including Uttarakhand. This project takes the approach of harmonious coexistence, by ensuring that both—humans and wildlife—are protected from such conflict. Standard operating procedures will also be developed under this project.
Haridwar divisional forest officer Akash Verma said, “This collaboration focuses on mitigating human-wildlife conflict in Uttarakhand, Karnataka and West Bengal especially due to the comparatively high number of tigers and elephants in these states.
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) is collaborating with India for this project. Different technological instruments will be provided and capability of wildlife officials to practically deal with situation will also be enhanced. Early warning system, solar fencing, pulsating current and tranquiliser guns will also be facilitated under the project. Village protection forces will also be formed and early warning system will also be maintained for the safety of residents.
