Fake call centre cheating foreigners busted

The police on Wednesday claimed to have busted a fake call centre in Udyog Vihar who used to cheat foreign nationals on the pretext of technical help and took several dollars as service charge.

Four persons were arrested and an FIR was filed against them under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including IT Act at the Cyber Crime police station.

A team of cybercrime unit raided the call centre located in Phase 6, Sector-37 after a tip-off. The police have seized 15 hard-disks, one laptop, i-tunes and google cards from them.

The arrested accused have been identified as Yogesh Bablani, Milan Sagar, Jai Jethani of Gujarat and Jitender who hails from New Delhi, all were living in Gurugram.

According to the police, when the team reached the call centre, the men were found sitting in front of computers and talking on the phone in English. The accused were middle run operators and the mastermind of the crime is yet to be arrested.

“A complaint was received that a fake call centre had cheated several people on the pretext of technical help. The case was assigned to the cybercrime branch of Gurugram for investigation. The culprits were employed at the call centres, which were being operated without permission,” said Subhash Boken spokesperson of Gurugram Police.

“During the questioning, the accused revealed that they used to call America and the data like mobile number, Email ID was provided by the owners of the centre. They sent bulk messages and mail to their clients via server and to warn them their social security registration will be closed and to resolve the issue they charged fees from the US residents. The registration number is important for the Americans to avail business facilities,” the police, said.

They used to talk to their clients by changing their names. The English name of the accused was provided by the owners so that they can easily interact with their foreign-based clients.

The fake call centre was running for the last five months and the culprits used to earn Rs 2 lakh per day by duping people. Also, the centre did not have any license issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DOT).

“The matter is under investigation. As of now how many persons they have duped and how they were operating the fake call centre it’s a part of an investigation. Hunts are on to nab owner of the centre,” Boken, said.
