Devati Karma likely to be Congress candidate for Dantewada by-polls

Devati Karma is likely to be nominated as Congress  candidate for Dantewada assembly by-polls. According to sources in the ruling Congress her name has been almost finalized by the election committee in its crucial meeting on Thursday.

Her name will be officially declared soon after final and formal approval of party’s national president Sonia Gandhi, sources added.

Devati was the Congress candidate from this seat in 2018 assembly elections. She lost by a narrow margin against BJP’s Bhima Mandavi. The seat fell vacant after Mandavi was killed in a Maoist attack.

Sources informed that Devati’s candidature was almost finalized in the Thursday’s crucial meeting of state election committee held here at Congress’s state headquarters Rajiv Bhawan wherein senior leaders of the party discussed about the possible names of candidates for Dantewada by-polls.

AICC’s Chhattisgarh in-charge for party affairs P.L. Punia, chief minister Bhupesh Baghel, PCC Chief Mohan Markam, ministers in the state cabinet and Congress MLAs were present in the meeting.

Talking to media persons P.L. Punia informed that as per the tradition of the grand old party the PCC chief would forward the name finalized at the elections committee meeting and the party’s national president would give a formal approval to it. Thereafter the name would finally be declared officially.
